Moore’s Law defines the history of technology. It held that the number of circuits etched on a given piece of silicon could double every 18 months as far as its author, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, could see. Moore’s Law has spawned constant revolutions since then, not just in computing but in communications, in science, in a host of areas. Moore’s Law applies to radios, and to optical fiber, but there are some areas where it doesn’t apply. In this blog we’ll take a daily look at new implications of Moore’s Law in real time, as it rolls forward to create our future.

Apple Claims iTunes Fix

Email This Entry

Posted by Dana Blankenhorn

itunes.jpgApple has released iTunes 5.0.1, which it says fixes problems found on iTunes 5.0.

I was frankly surprised at the number and vehemence of responses to my earlier item about iTunes 5.0 The reason? Reports on the problems have gotten very little traction in the mainstream press.

George W. Bush must envy Steve Jobs in some ways. Kanye West, who famously dissed the President during a Katrina fund-raiser, actually sang at the Apple iTunes 5.0 announcement, and didn't go off-message either. This story is being carried mainly in the blogosphere, where there are currently 176 posts under iTunes 5.0 problem (although not all are on-point).

Instead, Jobs and Apple continue to be hailed as heroes in the mainstream press:

  1. Reviews for the Apple iPod Nano are nothing but rapturous. Even Consumer Reports, which usually hates everything (and hated the Apple-Cingular ROKR phone) said it "sizzles."
  2. At an Apple event in Europe, Jobs came off as a crusading consumer advocate, holding the line on price rises proposed by the recording industry, especially for hit songs. (Hit albums are usually sold at sale prices while they're hot.)

If Steve Jobs were George Bush, what mighty victories would we seem to win?

What do you mean? Before (and after) Katrina, the mainstream press has been nothing but positive for Bush and his neo-Facist cabal. Iraq is routinely whitewashed.

Republicans, as long as they're rabid fundie lunatics, get a free pass in the mainstream press, and everyone else gets blamed. Blame the victim, always. That's the world according to Rove. And most people only know what the news tells them.

We're so fucked.

holy non sequitur, batman!

I thought this article was about iTunes 5.0.1

silly me.

BTW, from what I read at
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@248.kPUkaUiOSOB.0@.68b90c60

the problem may very well be Bonjour for Windows
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html

it attempts to configure the firewall to open port 5353,
that is also used by WebRamp, which has been exploited (DOS)
http://seclists.org/lists/bugtraq/1999/Mar/0267.html

so anyone with AV, firewall and malware scanners engaged
will probably have the software freak out and lock down the firewall

and it doesn't help that it installs an IE plugin as well....

and all that for zeroconf networking and music sharing - jeez....

Froob not only lead out with a non-sequiter, but he's in an altered state of consciousness if he thinks the mainstream press is pro-bush.

Plenty of friends use iTunes. None had a problem with 5. A hundred or so posts out of millions of downloads? Me thinks you're making a tempest out of a teapot. (As for the Bush bashers ... get over it.)

I don't understand. Apple issues a bug fix to iTunes. Kayne West sang when they introduced the Nano. Therefore, if Steve Jobs were George Bush we would win mighty victories.

What? I mean, it's just sort of stupid logic.

John McGready, no offense but you don't know what the hell you're talking about. I'm not sure what lead you to equate Bonjour with WebRamp. Maybe because the WebRamp exploit happened to mention port 5353 by coincidence? Of course Bonjour came out in 2001 and that article is from 1999, so I don't see any relevance. Also, previous versions of iTunes have always configured the firewall for port 5353, otherwise music sharing would never have worked. Yes, iTunes 5 had some bugs and I'm sure Apple will fix them, but it's ridiculous when people blame Bonjour without understanding anything about.

John McGready and Rusty Shackleford,
I also made the error of thinking this was about iTunes. Fool me once .......
Anyway, I was slow to adopt the Mac. I didn't buy a 128 until January of 1985. Didn't appriciate it unltil I upgraded to Plus configuration. - Everlasting love.
I admire Steve Jobs fir many things and buy Macs in spite of his politics BUT given a choice between George W. Bush and Steve I'd switch to Wintel. God Bless America and GWB.

128, PB 100, 12" iBook, 2- 14" iBooks, iMac, 17"PB, 15" PB, Quicksilver, 5 PeeCees and more on the way.

Let me see. Blankenhorn implies that Bush is wrongly set upon and Jobs is wrongly praised. Wrong on both points and to think it is a non sequitur to respond to a political viewpoint with a viewpoint is either stupid or just another political viewpoint. He has just expanded Apple bashing to include Democrat bashing. It is what they do.
