Moore’s Law defines the history of technology. It held that the number of circuits etched on a given piece of silicon could double every 18 months as far as its author, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, could see. Moore’s Law has spawned constant revolutions since then, not just in computing but in communications, in science, in a host of areas. Moore’s Law applies to radios, and to optical fiber, but there are some areas where it doesn’t apply. Don't Take iTunes 5.0 for Windows (For Now)

NOTE: There is an update to this article. Please go here to view it.

itunes.jpgThere are apparently serious problems with Version 5.0 of iTunes for Windows, which comes bundled with Version 7.0 of QuickTime.

Users are reporting that not only doesn't the software work, but they can't back out of it, and can't load older versions, once the upgrade button is pressed. Some complete computer failures have been reported.

Lauren Weinstein, co-founder of People For Internet Responsibility, reported on this to Dave Farber's Interesting-People list today:

I've personally now seen two systems that have fallen into this black
hole -- no working iTunes, no working QuickTime, and attempts to
install older versions (even just of QuickTime) fail miserably, even
after complex (and in some cases dangerous) attempts at cleaning out
the leftover muck. It's really a mess -- reminds me of early DOS
days.

Hopefully this is a short-term problem.

iTunes 5.0 crashed when I tried to install it and now I can't get older versions to work and can't fix it. Nothing and I mean nothing seems to fix it, and believe me, I've tried everything.
Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

iTunes lost 200 songs from my library, re-deiscovered old playlists I hadn't had for months (?) and got rid of all the ones I did have, then when I tried to install it again from my iPod disc, it wouldn't let me and a re-install from the apple site now won't work at all. I really hope there's a fix for this soon, coz this just ain't good enough.

5.0 for windows is causing major headaches, and should be taken off the website until Apple has a fix. Just checkout Apples Discussion boards.

It did not load on my 2 systems, nor countless others according to the message boards. This is the only site I've seen that has people with it working.

I think Itunes version 5 works better and have more features... My only negative is: It installs a few processes I dont want or need running!

Once I upgraded to iTunes 5 on my Windows XP, I lost my broadband connection. My provider wouldn't support the connection issues as they were due to iTunes and asked me to contact Apple for support.

I solved the problem by using the system recovery function of Windows XP and reset my laptop to a date prior to the iTunes 5 upgrade.

I hope there is a fix for this soon. 5.0 erased two-thirds of the songs on my iPod, then reports an error in trying to recopy the stuff it erased back onto the iPod (at least that's what I think it's saying, but the songs are gone for sure from the Pod). Boy, I wish I hadn't downloaded this crap...

I had problems installing 5.0. Finally, after disabling Norton Internet Security, the Bonjour program started working. Itunes worked for about a day, but now it won't even start up, even though Windows Task Manager says it is working and is using about 36mb of memory.

I love my CD collection and will never get rid of it.

Using iPods or whatever hardware/software device that allows third parties to decide about my music collection is unacceptable.

I continue to buy CD's every now and then despite owning one of those simple chinese mp3 players, that don't get even near an iPod but at least it'll never bite me.

THANK GOD. I'm so glad to read this forum and find I'm not the only one! None of my files will play after this stupid 5.0 update, and I'm about to freak out: Apple acted like I was nuts when I called them with the problem, and HP kept me on hold for two hours, then gave me the helpful suggestion to buy a new computer because this one probably is too old to "support the iTunes update". (It's about a year and a half old, give me a break.) There had BETTER be a fix soon.

I only installed it on one computer so far but I won't do it here. I wondered if it were bug-ridden though because it says I downloaded the English version but even when I choose English as the language for the "installation procedure", it goes ahead and installs it in the language of my operating system instead of what the installation file supposedly is. This didn't happen with ITFW 4.x.

Lost my Internet connection!

I installed iTunes 5 at work. We immediately lost internet access from every computer on our wireless network. We use a D-Link DSL-G604T wireless router at work.

Coincidently I have the same router at home. So I tried installing iTunes and... everyone in my house lost their internet connection!

Uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime fixed the problem .

Ditto re iTunes 5.0 and my Windows XP Pro. I keep getting error messages that Windows had to close the program and sent error reports. Restore wouldn't work. Tried to reinstall, Norton (which interestingly defaulted to not allow apple.com access) couldn't be reconfigured so it would help. I called Apple-no real help.
BIG problem.

I have been happilly running iTunes 4.9. Updating to 5 trashed my internet connection which is via a BT voyager router. Plently of people are having this problem - the BT Voyager site even has a firmware update to cure this specific issue, and D-link routers also seem to be affected. I am using a regularly updated, firewalled, virus protected, spyware clean XP pro sp2 machine with plenty of guts. I build machines regularly from components and am no noob -'Nobody' (see above) is just what he says he is. This stuff is simple enough even for a Nobody to use - when it works - I guess he does not have a network, or at least is fortunate enough not to have a sensitive router.

De-installing 5 + QT7, and flashing the router has not cured the problem - I am back to a poxy modem and fighting the family for net access via one computer. Having unleashed this toxic product into the world, Apple need to sort it out PDQ.

iTunes 5 is running fine on both of my older strawberry iMacs which are networked via a D-link ADSL wireless router and connect online via BT Broadband.

I then installed it on my Toshiba win XP notebook and immediatly lost my internet connection though all the various computers could still talk with each other.

System restore seemed to fix the internet connection problems and everything is back online but I find I am unable to re-install older versions of iTunes or QT on the notebook.

The Macs are still running iTunes 5 without problem.

This is clearly an issue with the Windows version...

I've had this problem! 5.0 won't install correctly, and it has damaged my current iTunes enough that it will no longer work correctly. I'm hoping to save my song ratings and then If someone has an idea how to correct the problem, I'd really appreciate it! Just email me. Thanks.

Thank GOD someone else had that problem, I was about to throw my router at the wall but I tried the (ever risky) system restore. Now I'm left without iTunes or Quicktime but at least I get on the friggin' internet again.

Ok, so, I have exactly the same souter and suffered from exactly the same problem, what I can't understand is how me installing itunes 5 on my PC effects A) The router's ability to send and recieve data to my PC and B) How it can possibly effect the rest of the network!?!

Now i've come to accept that it's iTunes 5 that is cuasing the problem I would like to understand how and why. Does anybody have any ideas? I've checked and rechecked my network settings a million times over and there's no reason it should drop the connection.

My ITunes 5.0 installed fine, and I hadn't had any problems using it. However, now I am not able to hear the music I have in my Windows Media Player version 10. I tried converting all of them to MP3 to play in ITunes, but it didn't import all of them.

Before my Itunes update, I could use either player just fine. I can't find anything about my problem, but given the amount of other concerns, I don't think I am the only one. Does anyone else have this issue?

My itunes is no longer working either. I've tired the removal of quicktime, reisntall it seperately, deleted registry items etc.,.....no luck...no itunes, and ipod is in drawer for now because i know every song on it by heart.

I will rethink buying such an apple product again...hate being trapped into their software.

Also, what was with the manic updates with itunes. My god, we don't need a new one every month! :P
