The explosion in cameraphones is creating an explosion of litigation, legislation and innovation.

Here's some of the latter, solutions from two Japanese inventors and Hewlett-Packard that blur the view of anyone caught on camera without their consent. (The H-P version requires a compatible camera.)

Pretty cool, huh? Solves a lot of problems, doesn't it?

Well, there's sheep-rustling going on in Wales, and the Farmers Union of Wales there is hoping a little sousveillance will clear it up.

"I would appeal to anyone who has one of these camera phones and who sees something that looks suspicious to take a photograph of the incident," FUW president Gareth Vaughan told the BBC. "Photographs of lorries, trailers and number plates could be extremely useful."

And if those plates are masked, if those drivers are wearing technology that keeps them from being photographed, what then?

Technology does not have loyalty. What's good for Britney Spears works equally well for the sheep rustler.

Baah!

Why is this device only for sousveillance cameras. It could be applied equally well to surveillance cameras.

Thus in the same way that the police who beat Rodney King might have gotten a little privacy from the guy with the video camera, shoplifters in department stores could also enjoy some privacy.

Equal privacy for all perpetrators!
