From an Arab-American

From a reader who requests anonymity, and who gave me permission to post this version with identifying info removed:

As for your Tuesday night scorecard: My scorecard matches yours.

When Barack Obama started speaking, I got goosebumps. But further into his speech — rich with concrete details and a human no-catch-phrase voice — when he had the compassion and, more important, courage to cite an Arab American family as part of HIS e pluribus unum, he won my heart forever.

David, life has been at best disheartening or worse, terrifying for Arab Americans since 9-11. Both I and my brother lost our jobs — mine, w/o a doubt because of blatant, direct, verbally unambiguous bigotry and rascism. An afront so small-minded that I wish I had taped it; it is, however, seared on my heart. Maybe if I had had a tape the ACLU or some other fearless group may have been willing to attempt to bring justice to bear, but it was such a hot potato that even the [unnamed] institute’s director, a naturalized Arab American, had to drop it. And my new manager didn't just lay me off — when I fought it he had me moved to the most remote corner of the [institute], into a crumbling asbestos-flaking former gamma-ray trailer-lab, which still housed unprotected radioactive material not 10 feet from my desk.... For health's sake, I decided to drop it and move on, but a profound cynicism about human nature and justice lingers.

A few weeks ago the FBI had the decency to call my close American-born cousin, saying they had decided he was NOT the [first/last name] they were hunting — after surrepticiously eavesdropping on his personal and business life for several months! Geez, MY personal life would have given them more entertainment value. This cousin is a hard-working businessman; a Republican, church-going (yeah, Christian) do-gooder; a devoted, snapshot-wielding family man. Perhaps the FBI hasn't hired enough independent contractor translators to inform it that the name [first/last name] is equivalent to Cincinnati Sam or Frisco Joe; that last name simply means "[originally] from [unnamed country]," so there are unrelated families in every country those people immigrated to — two in Palestine, separated by about 800 years. (Man, that OTHER family is the troublemaker! ;-)

In those first perilous weeks following 9-11, my Finnish neighbor said to me: "The government should just round up all the Muslims and put them in camps — for their OWN protection." "Well I hope you'll come and visit me there!" [me, recovering from the blow] "But you're a Christian, aren't you?" "Neighbor, I don't think they'll be asking me about my religious convictions."

I didn't intend a tirade, but Obama inspired me enough to break the silence of fear, enough to allow a sliver of optimism to wedge itself back into my life, and to consider staying in this country — MY country, MY home-state — instead of moving overseas.
