Punching Judy
Nice piece by Katha Pollitt in The Nation on the stinky, sexist reporting about Judy Steinberg Dean. (Thanks to Doc for the link.)

Great article. The "problem" here is that you can't change politics just because you are the Internet candidate. That should be a theme.
The problem with Judy Steinberg is how she was handled by the campaign. There were questions for months about why Judy wasn't in the campaign. OK, that is bad enough. You don't want the reporters and gossipers asking unanswered questions. Don't any of you have the Lee Atwater desk calendar????? If you're going to insist that she is a busy doctor, you cannot just bring her out when the campaign is on the brink, and let's face it, the campaign was on the brink before Howard went Billy Idol on us.
That brought more of a spotlight and raised more questions, and got the whisperers whispering again. A very fair political point is made by all the teenage level gossip though. Judgement. Howard is holding a card, and he brings it out when he is in trouble, and it turns out he is holding maybe a 7 and it's not even trump. Say what you want about Bush (and as a small-government libertarian type, I'm just as disgusted with him from another angle). He always holds the best cards. Judy Steinberg may be a fine doctor and a fine wife and a great person, but in the political arena, she wasn't a good card to hold.
