Total schizophrenia -- and their policies regarding concert recordings are another example. DMB's audio taping and trading policy follows the inspiration of the Dead, and certainly helped them to build a loyal following (along with the likes of Phish, Widespread Panic and Jason Mraz). But you can't find any DMB concerts available at such sharing sites as the Internet Live Music Archive or etree.org anymore -- at the direct request of DMB management [1] [2].

Yet you can still download SHNs of DMB concerts just as easily at http://www.antsmarching.org/downloads/.

As far as I can tell, the objection to ILMA and etree was that they allowed anonymous downloads, while sites like antsmarching require a user to register before downloading, thus fulfilling their requirement for "personal fan interaction" as a criterion for authorized trading.

Yeah, that and something else about angels and the head of a pin. Makes no sense to me.
