About this blog
The rise of mass media in the last half of the 20th Century turned us all into "consumers" and took away much of the natural human inclination to be creators, performers, singers, musicians and storytellers.

Today, the rapid proliferation of cheap professional-quality media-making tools, paired with the drastic decrease in the cost of content distribution is leading to a quiet, but quite real revolution in the quantity and quality of "amateur" content. It's the democratization of media, the "Big Flip" as Clay Shirky calls it, and we think it's going to play an increasingly important role in how we make, share and consume media. For more, read my introduction to Amateur Hour.

Don't Believe the skype?

I don't know if they're pronouncing it sky-pee or skype as in hype, but skype is a P2P VoIP application from some of the founders of KaZaA. I seem a little late to this game as over 4 Million people have already downloaded the application and I just found out about it today from Farber's IP list.

Skype is currently free and has no spyware. The Skype installation is no harder than any IM client and they claim their encypted VoIP sound quality that is better than phones.

This is the first peice of software since Napster changed the landscape of digital music forever that has given me the same shiver of excitement. Skype may be capable of making every broadband-connected PC on the planet a 2-way encrypted voice communications device. What do you think?
